Reading with Our Children, Craft Included

February 26, 2018 · In: Kid's Activities, Lifestyle

Read Across America Day is right around the corner, and we have been coming up with some fun activities to go a long with all that reading. It is no surprise that Dr. Seuss’ birthday is on Read Across America Day on March 2!

The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.

We love us some Dr. Seuss in this house, whether it be Fox in Socks to even Oh, the Places You’ll Go. It was only fitting to include a craft that celebrated both our reading as well as Dr. Seuss’ birthday!

How those Dr. Seuss books touch our hearts and minds.

There really is something magically about reading. Reading can take us on an adventure in our mind, to places never even heard of. This is most certainly the case with Dr. Seuss books. Who every would have thought of visiting Whoville? Dr. Seuss books are still as magical for me as they were when I was a child. As I mentioned above, Oh, the Places You’ll Go is my all time favorite. It know has an even special place for me now that I am a parent.

“You have brains in your head you have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” ― Dr. Seuss

Reading with our children.

Reading with our children is such a simple thing to do that does more than just ‘educate’. It is also a bonding experience. You are not only taking time out of the busy day to spend quality time with your child, but you are also getting down on their level to enter a world of imagination. This world of imagination allows for us to escape to worlds unheard of and to do this together in our very own homes. How special and cool is that?!

Children yearn for that chance to have imagination as well as have that quality time with you as a parent. Reading takes these two things and makes it magical for both of you 🙂

If time permits, we LOVE to add crafts to whatever we have been reading! I of course just had to do this balloon craft with my kids, it is after all based on my favorite Dr. Seuss book 😉

Easy Peasy Balloon Craft

All you need for this craft is:

  • construction paper
  • tape
  • string/twine
  • cut out picture of your child (or you!): make sure the picture has a hand available for holding onto that balloon 😉
  • scissors

This craft is so easy to do! All you need to do is cut a balloon shape out of construction paper, attach string to the back of it with tape, and then attach the other end of the string to the cutout picture. For added fun, you and your child can decorate your balloon however you all want.

Now, go off and take some time to read!

Love this! Reading with and reading to my children as they grew up was an important part of life. Honestly, though, sometimes I felt so impatient and too busy to truly enjoy the experience. I wish I could turn back time a little bit…: ) And, thanks, for reminding me that I share the same birthday as Dr. Seuss! Just LOVE his books! My dad made green eggs and ham when I was a little girl for my brother because it was his favorite books. That’s a memory I will never forget. Thanks!!!

So cute! The balloon craft turned out great. My youngest daughter, who is almost 2, LOVES reading! I have a basket full of books just for her. She likes to read some of the other books off the bookshelves, but these ones are hers. Her top two favorite books are Llama Llama Red Pajama and Good Night Gorilla. She would read all day if she could.

A spicy pasta recipe that is so good! Maddy DeVita A spicy pasta recipe that is so good! Maddy DeVita knew what she was doing with this Spicy Tomato Tagliatelle as did @seventhgeneration with their Clementine Zest & Lemongrass Dish Soap, 95% Biobased Formula. It helps tackle grease WITHOUT all the extra effort. Giving more time to delicious meals and family time and not extra when it comes to cleaning!

What you need:
1/2 pound egg tagliatelle
3 tablespoons tomato paste
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (or more if you’re feeling bold)
4 large garlic cloves, thinly sliced
3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1/4 cup finely grated parm, plus more for topping Kosher salt, as needed

What you do:
Bring a large pot of well-salted water to a boil (don’t be shy - this is your pasta’s only chance to season itself properly). Cook the tagliatelle until 1 or 2 minutes shy of al dente, following package instructions.
• While the pasta cooks, warm the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add the garlic and red pepper flakes and let them gently sizzle until fragrant and beginning to brown, about 3 minutes.
Remember, as Nonna would say, “DON’T let the garlic burn!”
• Add the tomato paste to the skillet. Break it up into the oil and fry for about 2 minutes until it deepens in color and gets a little caramelized- this step is key for building the rich flavor of our sauce, don’t skipl
• Add a ladle of pasta water to the skillet and whisk, scraping up any caramelized bits, until a smooth sauce forms.
When the pasta is 1 or 2 minutes shy of al dente, use tongs to transfer the pasta straight from the pot. Toss over medium heat for 1 to 2 minutes, adding more pasta water as needed, until the pasta has finished cooking and the sauce has thickened up around the pasta.
• Turn off the heat, then stir in the parm until it melts into the sauce like it belongs there (because it does).
• Serve immediately. Try not to eat it straight from the pan... but no promises.

Enjoy 😘
