The warmer weather is officially here, and we are doing any and all things outdoors. This includes side walk chalk, water balloon fights, and even gardening. Gardening with kids may seem overwhelming, but it can be easy and a lot of fun! This kid-friendly succulent garden will be a hit with any kid.
Succulent gardening with kids.
Most kids love anything that includes both dirt and water. Enter in any gardening activity. It can get a little messy with kids, but that is why we have Dial Complete® 2 in 1 Moisturizing & Antibacterial Foaming Hand Wash! All it takes is a little soap and water to have those little hands ready for the next activity. Gardening can include any plant seed, plants, pots or a flower bed. In this gardening activity, we will be decorating plastic pots and planting succulent plants. We even added our own little accessories to our potted plant.
Why succulent plants? Succulent plants are very hardy plants. They will thrive as long as you place them in well-draining soil, water weekly, and place in a sunny spot. Succulent plants also are exactly that, succulent. You don’t have to worry about anything spiky or pointy with majority of these plants. This makes them the perfect plant for kids, or even those who don’t consider themselves ‘green thumbs’. Let’s get to planting!
Supply checklist.
For this gardening activity, all you will need is:
- Plastic Pot
- Succulent Plant
- Small pebbles
- Soil Mix intended for Cactus & Succulent Plants
- Paint/Paint Brushes
- (Optional) Decorative Accessories
Once you have all your items, set up a place for painting and planting. The best place would be outside since you will not have to worry about the mess of soil and pebbles all over your kitchen floor. Let your child get creative when painting their pots! Have them pick out the colors and design. After the pots have been painted and they are dry, you can begin to prep the pot for planting.
The small pebbles will be placed in the pot first. This helps prevent the roots from sitting in water and rotting. About 1″ of pebbles will be sufficient. Next you will fill the pot about half way with the soil mix, followed by placing your succulent plant on top. My kids love the process of gardening! Continue to add dirt around the succulent plant until the pot is filled with soil mix and the succulent plant’s roots are covered. Gently pat the dirt down.
The next step is optional. If you have kids like mine who love accessories, then you will not want to miss out on this step! We picked up fairy garden accessories at our local craft store. Any type of accessory will work here. It is all for fun and to encourage the creativity of your child! Lastly, lightly water your succulent plant and place in a sunny spot.
Clean up.
Now that you have your pots painted and succulents planted, it is time to clean up. Doing this project outside makes it easier when it comes to cleaning up the actual planting mess. What about those little hands? Dial Complete® 2 in 1 Foaming Hand Wash is perfectly formulated to keep hands moisturized with 2x moisturizing ingredients, even after repeated washing. My kids were washing their hands after painting and planting. It is good to have a hand soap that doesn’t dry out the skin of those little hands or even my hands. The unique formula from Dial® ensures that hands not only stay clean, but also moisturized after each wash with its 2x moisturizing ingredients compared to other regular hand soap.
Can’t forget the fact that it kills 99.9% bacteria* encountered in common household settings. Dial®’s new 2 in 1 formula is both antibacterial and moisturizing! I easily found the Dial Complete® 2 in 1 Foaming Hand Wash at my local Target. Check out the Dial® 2 in 1 Brand Page for these great coupon offers, while supplies last!

Is it bad that I now want to have babies so I can do this with them? haha. Such a fun looking activity!
Haha! Most certainly not 😉 We definitely had a lot of fun with this one!
What a great idea! And you could even take it one step further and make a whole fairy garden using succulents – how fun would that be? My kids are a little bigger now, so they are actually useful for things like weeding and unsupervised watering – but I think we could have a lot of fun with this too.
So true! That is a great and fun idea!
I just made a succulent garden for my work on Friday! I love your tips!
Thank you! Succulent gardens are easy to make and so much fun!
