Earth Day is such a great and fun day to celebrate with the kids. A time to take note on how we can do better to protect the planet we live on and have some gardening fun with the kids. This year we decided to not only plant seeds, but also recycle while doing it! Here is our planting seeds activity that we did to celebrate Earth Day!
Planting seeds for Earth Day.
You don’t need much to celebrate Earth Day. With this activity, we ran to Home Depot to let the kids pick out whatever seeds they wanted to plant as well as our potting soil mix. At home, we gathered up all our cardboard shoe boxes that we had been saving for a rainy day craft.
By using the shoe box as the pot for these seeds, you are recycling! In past years, we have even planted seeds into empty (washed of course) egg shells. There are many options to how you want to plant these seeds by using things found at home!
Items Needed:
Packet of Seeds (we let the kids pick out their own)
Potting Soil Mix
Container for planting seeds (cardboard shoe box)
Now for the setup.
The great thing about this activity is that it can all be done outdoors, meaning less mess to clean up and more time spent outdoors. Get the kids started and let them finish. A little extra dirt here or there won’t hurt anyone. As you can see from the pictures, we even recycled our Chick Fil A cup from lunch!
- Label the shoe boxes first for which seeds will be planted
- Add dirt to each box: 1/3-2/3’s full is plenty
- Sprinkle the seeds on top of the dirt
- Sprinkle dirt on top of seeds, enough to just cover them
- Water and place in a sunny location!
Gardening and Earth Day.
My kids love playing in the dirt! So it is no wonder they have a love for gardening. No better day than Earth Day to take advantage of planting seeds, recycling, and learning how easy it is to take care of our planet!
Happy Earth Day!
My kids and I did a ton of gardening this weekend, too! We planted a bunch in the garden and started some snap dragon and basil seeds indoors. Fingers crossed the plants do well!
Yay! So much fun! Fingers crossed as well!
Great outdoor activity for the kids! We can’t wait to have our own garden next year!
Thank you! Gardening is so much fun!
What a perfect activity for earth day! And love that you reused old boxes
Thank you so much!
I love the shoebox idea! I am sure it transplants so much better than little cups.
Thank you! And they definitely make it easier!
I love finding new outdoor activities for my girls!!
Having outdoor activities lined up for the kids is the best!
