Planting Seeds with Kids: Gardening Fun for Earth Day

April 22, 2019 · In: Kid's Activities, Lifestyle

Earth Day is such a great and fun day to celebrate with the kids. A time to take note on how we can do better to protect the planet we live on and have some gardening fun with the kids. This year we decided to not only plant seeds, but also recycle while doing it! Here is our planting seeds activity that we did to celebrate Earth Day!

Planting seeds for Earth Day.

You don’t need much to celebrate Earth Day. With this activity, we ran to Home Depot to let the kids pick out whatever seeds they wanted to plant as well as our potting soil mix. At home, we gathered up all our cardboard shoe boxes that we had been saving for a rainy day craft.

By using the shoe box as the pot for these seeds, you are recycling! In past years, we have even planted seeds into empty (washed of course) egg shells. There are many options to how you want to plant these seeds by using things found at home!

Planting Seeds with Kids-Earth Day

Items Needed:

Packet of Seeds (we let the kids pick out their own)

Potting Soil Mix

Container for planting seeds (cardboard shoe box)

Now for the setup.

The great thing about this activity is that it can all be done outdoors, meaning less mess to clean up and more time spent outdoors. Get the kids started and let them finish. A little extra dirt here or there won’t hurt anyone. As you can see from the pictures, we even recycled our Chick Fil A cup from lunch!

Planting Seeds with Kids-Earth Day

  • Label the shoe boxes first for which seeds will be planted
  • Add dirt to each box: 1/3-2/3’s full is plenty
  • Sprinkle the seeds on top of the dirt
  • Sprinkle dirt on top of seeds, enough to just cover them
  • Water and place in a sunny location!

Gardening and Earth Day.

My kids love playing in the dirt! So it is no wonder they have a love for gardening. No better day than Earth Day to take advantage of planting seeds, recycling, and learning how easy it is to take care of our planet!

Happy Earth Day!

My kids and I did a ton of gardening this weekend, too! We planted a bunch in the garden and started some snap dragon and basil seeds indoors. Fingers crossed the plants do well!

I love the shoebox idea! I am sure it transplants so much better than little cups.

What do you do with these 3 things : @appalachian_ What do you do with these 3 things : @appalachian_cast_iron , LSU Football, and 1st tailgate of the season? You make a great recipe perfect for tailgating of course! This Handmade Carbon Steel Skillet from Appalachian Cast Iron is not only much easier to cook with compared to cast iron, each skillet is truly unique! The hammered texture is unique for each skillet, but the handle is even hand made and practical. With the precision grind of the cook surface, there is enough “tooth” for the seasoning to adhere - no worries of that seasoning flaking off like some carbon steel skillets. Also, you can personalize the bottom of the skillet!

Philly Cheesesteak Sliders
-1/2 white onion, diced
-1 red bell pepper, sliced
-1 1/2 cups sliced bella mushrooms
-1 tbsp minced garlic
-1 lb shaved beef steak
-~2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
-5-6 slices of provolone
-salt/ pepper to taste
-Hawaiian Rolls

Add onion, red bell pepper, garlic to hot skillet and cook until tender, add mushrooms, 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce and salt/pepper and cook down until mushrooms darken and are more tender. Add water as needed; remove from skillet and add seasoned shave beef to a hot pan. Add 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce and cook until meat is no longer pink. Add veggie mix back to pan and top with provolone. Allow to cook until cheese is melted. Serve on sliced Hawaiian Rolls!
